I just can’t win – Unless the prize is for least likely to win
Seriously, in the words of Kanye West, “Why won’t you just let me be great?” Well, when I say it, it just sounds rediculous and blowhardy. I don’t really want to be “great”, I just want to be #1. And this ongoing dilemma is causing me to sprout grey hairs and I’m pretty sure that I’m going to need some E.D. pills pretty soon (any spammers want to tell me about cialis?).
If you follow my blog, then you probably have been following my struggles to be the #1 Nick Norris on Google. It’s not hard to do, but every time I hit the #1 position, it lasts for about 2 days, and then I’m bumped down to the #2 position by some dooshy website. Well this time it’s a little different, and I think that Google’s latest algo changes have something to do with it. Here’s what I am thinking.
As of yesterday, Facebook was down at the bottom of page one in Google for the search “nick norris”. This is while I was reigning surpreme in the #1 spot (whut whut). Today, I decided to check my rankings again through a simple organic search, and low-and-behold, Facebook was #1. But that’s not all. The Facebook listing that shows up is a Facebook search result, and not a direct profile on Facebook. How can a Facebook search result be MORE relevant than a site Titled “Nick Norris Blog?” This doesn’t make any sense to me. This is a shining example of how Google may be missing the mark in overall relevance.
Facebook has hundreds of millions of users. If someone wanted to search Facebook for something, they would search Facebook directly. In my experience, If I am searching for someone, then Facebook would probably be the first place that I would check, and after that, I would go to Google, then Yahoo, and so on… This is because I am not only an SEO dude, but I also use Google from the end-user perspective. It’s amazing how much you can learn from a search engine just from doing some basic searches and looking at the results (which is something that a lot of SEOs never do, they are too interested in exploitation and the inner-workings of search engines).
So why does this Facebook thing piss me off so much?
Well, to me, it’s all about the relevance of a site. If someone is looking for a specific Nick Norris, why would they want to be directed to a list of profiles that they cannot access unless they make a connection? They don’t, simple. So, Google places a huge weight on Branding over smaller blogs and static pages.
I really don’t have anything else to say about this, I guess I am just venting about crap.

Ok, so I’m confused. Now that I have been looking at Google all day, everything is back in line with how it should be. Facebook is no longer #1, so what could have possibly been going on? I don’t know. It was not a sponsored ad, I double checked google when I was logged in and logged out from other computers and what not, and I asked other people to double check, and it was all the same. Now what?!?
Is Google toying with my emotions? Did they somehow catch wind of my dissatisfaction? Am I just being a humungus bag of dooshballs?
I think Google was trying some search result manipulation today, but I can’t prove it. So if you can’t beat em, join em…
